As you will probably have realised by now, Great Britain is going through a very intense period of change. On May 6th we had our first General Election in five years as millions of us headed to the polls. The immediate result initially resulted in a hung parliament as no party gained a significant majority enough to hold power. However less than a week later our first "coalition government" since 1940 was formed with Conservative David Cameron becoming Britain's new prime minister and Liberal democrat leader Nick Clegg becoming deputy prime minister.
As this new coalition government was formed the new administration obviously has been confronted with a bewildering array of problems. Foremost among them is our colossal national debt followed by very serious social concerns including an entire generation of disaffected young people fuelling knife and gun crime, drug and substance abuse also not helped by the almost total collapse of the British family. A total lack of values and almost no moral guidance has also brought about an alarming rise in sexual and promiscuous behaviour with some totally shocking stories involving pre-pubescent children implicated in crimes as serious as attempted rape. We also have an ongoing conflict in Afghanistan after nearly a decade of fighting now claiming so far almost 300 lives. Of course the whole world has ultimately been affected by the economic collapse with China being so far the only major world economy coming out of the resulting recession.
So adding all these concerns up we come to a truly momentous period in the history of our nation where we can go either way: A future period of blessing our or alarming descent into chaos. Which way will Britain choose?
OUR DEBT CRISIS
As soon as our new coalition government was sworn in the obvious task facing the new administration is our national debt crisis.
On leaving office, Britain's former prime minister Gordon Brown claimed that our national debt figures were an estimated £890 billion. However after further analysis the true debt figure was estimated to be much higher. Some treasury ministers are now estimating our true national debt figures to be in the trillions. The latest estimate puts our national debt at £2.24 trillion! That amounts to £77,770 for every person in this country with a job! This debt prediction takes into account the current official debt of £890 billion which is set to rise by another £500 billion to£1.4 trillion by 2014. Add to this the public's bill for public service pensions estimated to be around £1.2 trillion. Also add to this more private-sector debt which could push it up a further £150 billion. Our new Chancellor of the Exchequer is now expected to slash £6 billion off public spending as an emergency measure. These new proposals however could have a damaging effect as up to 700,000 public sector workers could loose their jobs as cuts bite. David Cameron himself seemed to sum it all up as he claimed that Britain was "bankrupt, broken and bust."
So if we look at these alarming figures it does look rather gloomy. Some ministers claim that Britain's real debt is more than £2 trillion, the equivalent to £77,770 for every person in this country with a job. It will take some radical decisions to bring this astronomical figure down. But this is just one of the major crises facing us today. As well as national bankruptcy we also have moral and spiritual bankruptcy as an entire generation in our country needs urgent guidance perhaps in every facet of their lives. Youngsters are leaving school feeling anxious and afraid and distrusting in an older generation who seem indifferent to their needs.
Now we have ten and eleven year old's falling into serious crime, implicated in serious felonies that would surely have been considered totally shocking a generation ago and yet this is now considered more the norm. The war in Afghanistan and the whole fiasco of the Iraq invasion has caused an entire generation to question its purpose in life. Who am I? Why am I here? What is required of my life?
Those are just some of the questions facing us right now as we consider the question: Is there Something or Someone beyond ourselves who could actually offer us supernatural answers?
A POSSIBLE SOLUTION
As we weigh all of this up is there a solution to all of this, perhaps a solution that no one has actually even considered? Britain has always been in a position to be truly blessed by God just as much as America, China or any other nation. This period in our history is best characterised as being very secular with a vacuum existing at the heart of our society. Even the apostle Paul spoke of a time when people "Would have a form of Godliness but deny the power thereof."
People obviously need clear direction in their lives and this includes Britain as an entire nation.
Regarding the debt crisis, its interesting that even in the old testament nations were also facing debt crisises just as Britain is today. Yet Almighty God always had a solution for his people. In Deuteronomy 15 we are told how God's people the nation of Israel were granted a release of debts every seven years. Every seven years God would instruct ancient Israel to cancel all debts that were owed them. Listen to what God says in verse 6: "For the Lord your God will bless you just as He promised you you shall lend to many Nations, but you shall not borrow, you shall reign over many Nations, but they shall not reign over you." In other words God is instructing Israel not to borrow but to lend to other nations, then promising His people that they shall reign over MANY nations. As it says earlier in this chapter Israel is blessed by having all its debts cancelled every seven years. God even has an anti-poverty program so to speak when He says that in verse 11: "you shall open your hand wide to your brother to your poor and your needy, in your land." In the seventh year God commands His people to help out their poor members by giving and providing for them which as stated involved cancelling all debts.
So God actually says as a nation that "we shall lend and NOT borrow."
In another part of the Old Testament in Leviticus Chapter 26 we learn that a nation's greatness lies in its willingness to obey God and His commandments. In this chapter God is saying that as long as His chosen people, the nation of Israel cast away all of its idols and walks uprightly by worshipping the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, the true and living God that they shall truly multiply and prosper in all that they do. It also repeats this in Deuteronomy chapter 8 when obeying God and living by His commandments is equated with material blessings such as wealth and prosperity with livestock being multiplied and silver and gold also being multiplied. So in other words if a nation humbles itself before God it will enjoy tremendous prosperity and other benefits. In Leviticus 26 we are told that God will "break the pride" of a nation's power if its departs from His goodness. Add to this 2 Chronicles 7.14 when God says if a nation that had initially turned away from Him returns to Him He "will bear from heaven and heal their land."
I personally believe that God has broken the pride of our nation already including through our national debt crisis. But He offers us another path if we openly acknowledge Him and ask for forgiveness and come into a Forever Friendship with Him. This also includes us as individuals as we all have the "God-shaped hole" in our hearts. Yes we may be trillions in debt but remember this: that God Himself says as a nation that "you shall lend and NOT borrow." Debt crises can be averted if people simply adopt better spending habits and that also includes nations as well as individuals. Listen to what God say in Malachi: "And try Me now in this says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field, says the Lord of hosts. And all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land says the Lord of hosts"(Mal 3.10-12). God promises nations as well as individuals tremendous blessings if they walk uprightly and love and obey him. Maybe Britain as a whole nation should admit its faults and return to its Heavenly Father who will hear from heaven and heal their land?
A MORAL DILEMMA
Its not only a debt crisis that is facing Britain right now but also a moral and spiritual crisis. Where does this crisis rest with?
As usual with our young people, who are naturally the future of mankind. Britain's young people in particular are facing a tremendous dilemma right now. One of the places they are facing this dilemma the most right now is in the home. Years ago the home was a place of refuge and security, a haven of stability where young children could escape from all their trials and difficulties in life and receive warm hugs and loving embraces from dedicated and loving parents and nurtured in a happy and wholesome atmosphere, just as God intended it to be. Sadly this is no longer the case. The home, once described as the bedrock of any secure nation, has been invaded by all manner of violence and permissiveness. First of all more and more young people are choosing to live together outside of marriages which in itself causes problems. Most marriages now seem to eventually result in divorce, creating a vast number of homes where children are being raised in one-parent families. Add to this the increasing influence of violent television shows and movies which feed impressive young minds with a stream of unhealthy images glorifying violence and sex. This escalating amount of violence and immorality is also invading our homes through the Internet where more and more young people are being groomed by individuals with their own twisted form of propaganda and their distorted views on life. This is what one young recently married person said. "If you flip on the T.V. you don't see families anymore. Family life is not a part of the cannon. It takes a lot of faith to reinstate marriage into your vision of life." Now listen to what Dr Shervent Frazier the Director of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health has to say in his book "Psycho Trends." He describes what he calls a "co-violent society which celebrates mayhem while simultaneously condemning it. He says on one hand we condemn violence but feed it to our kids on television. We condemn murder on one hand but celebrate it on television on the other. Consider this astounding fact about young people and television. The average 18 year old in Britain has witnessed 200,000 violent acts on television and movies, including 40,000 murders!!! When you watch 40,000 murders your mind becomes anaesthetised towards violence, when you see 200,000 violent acts your mind pre-programs itself sublimely to believe that violence is perfectly acceptable and good. It seems now that even our young people's minds are being brainwashed by our popular mass-media. Young people are being increasingly pressurised by the popular media to grow up well before their time with young children being constantly sexualised by images on television and the Internet, with even prime-time soap operas featuring story lines containing explicit violence and sex. It also appears that more and more very young children are being implicated in serious felonies even involving rape and murder. So as we see our young people are constantly being put at risk by an older and totally indifferent older generation with sometimes devastating results. It seems that an entire generation in this country is now in crisis, possibly even the generation that the entire future of this nation rests with. It seems that Britain indeed now stands at a crossroads.
WHAT DOES GOD THINK
What does God think?
In my opinion God sees a country right now on the verge of an immense crisis. With a national debt spiralling out of control, an entire generation of young people seriously at risk, appalling social conditions and an alarming interest in subjects such as Witchcraft and Satanism developing, God offers us another chance, I believe. A chance to truly look into our hearts and acknowledge that we first of all need to change ourselves. Real change comes from within and of course we all have the God-shaped hole in our hearts because the Bible says that the Creator "has put eternity into our hearts." Our hearts all secretly long to know Him and think there is a tremendous spiritual hunger existing in Britain today especially with our young people.
Could it be the God will actually use this new generation of young people to carry his message of hope to the whole world? If you look at all of this through the eyes of faith it could be through this generation that God will instigate a spiritual awakening of almost inconceivable proportions, maybe one of the greatest if not the greatest spiritual awakening in history. The generation born from the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s was known as generation X. The generation born after the mid 1980s to this day, is known as generation Y. So Generation Y are the youth of the 21st century and this obviously includes the youth of Great Britain. It could be right now at this time of great social unrest and economic downturn that God will stir the hearts of people throughout our nation especially our young people and bring about this harvest of souls. Yes, secular humanist mentality may be spreading like wildfire throughout Britain including a new generation of militant atheists and alternatively a renewed interest in Witchcraft and Satanism is also giving momentum , but I believe that God has another alternative, the fire of the Holy Spirit.
Maybe Britain's "Generation Y" is God's chosen generation for our time, the generation through whom the Holy Spirit is working, already preparing souls for our time, the generation through whom the Holy Spirit is working, already preparing souls for miraculous intervention. I already know certain young people, one in particular through whom God is already demonstrating immeasurable grace and power and restoration through their very lives. I already know that this restoration is taking place throughout Britain right now creating a fine revival in the hearts of certain people.
Fathers House Church I believe will be at the very heart of this revival in Britain, especially as it will be a worship haven I believe for Generation Y and maybe even for further generations to come. American pastor Rick Warren believes that "the greatest churches in history are yet to be built." Was he speaking about Fathers House? Only God knows the answer to that one, but I still believe that one day Fathers House Church could be at the cutting edge of the Generation Y-inspired Spiritual revival in Britain, creating shock-waves that could reach across the world. This revival will take place in peoples souls because Jesus Himself said that "the kingdom of God is within you." The Y-Generation may be the very generation that will lead Fathers House Church, the very generation that will spell out this message to all our leaders and politicians: "These are our lives you are messing with, we want change here, we need some answers, you need answers too. We need love and guidance in our lives, your obviously not giving it to us, but do you know what, God will give it us, if you don't"
You see our young people (Generation Y) need answers today and want to be cherished. God can heal our nation in all sorts of ways as I said before, but remember our future lies with our young people-they are the leaders of tomorrow, they are Fathers House Church. They are God's chosen.
Could this be Britain's date with destiny?
